Divorce is challenging for everyone involved, especially during such a trying time as the COVID-19 pandemic. The added stress and uncertainty made it difficult for couples to communicate and negotiate with each other, making the process less efficient and more complicated.

At CEL & Associates, we too had our fair share of challenges during the pandemic as we had to handle all meetings with our clients via Zoom. Though we were initially against this, as we had always seen clients in person, we have found that Zoom has helped our clients in more ways than we could have ever imagined. Our clients have been able to reach good agreements in a shorter period of time; they are less argumentative, less stressed, and more agreeable. They save thousands of dollars on attorneys’ fees and end mediation as good co-parents, working together for their children.

The overall impact our industry saw during the COVID-19 pandemic was an uptick in people seeking mediation, as many courthouses closed down and people wanted to make progress on their divorce.

With the uptick in clients, we were very busy. Though stressful at times, we were able to help many clients stay out of court, avoid litigation, save money and work together for their children.

Our expectations for the next twelve months

For us, the next twelve months will be roughly the same as the past twelve months. With mediators seeing clients via Zoom, thus allowing them to avoid going to a courthouse for court, having to take time off work to drive to our offices, and being able to meet anywhere any time, mediation continues to grow as the preferred alternative to litigation. In the coming months, we expect the following changes:

Mediation and court via Zoom are here to stay

This will likely take some of the stress and anxiety out of the divorce process for many people, as well as streamline the process more now than ever before. With Zoom, all you need is a computer and an internet connection, and you can be done with the entire process from the comfort of your own home.
