Ellen Feldman Biography

Ellen Feldman is an attorney and family mediator practicing with C.E.L. & Associates in the Chicago area. She completed her undergraduate studies in government at Smith College in 1978 and went on to earn her law degree from Indiana University School of Law in 1981. After law school, Ellen spent 15 years practicing commercial litigation in Chicago, working with both small and large law firms. During that time, she appeared in Illinois State and Federal courts and was active in her community, including volunteering in local schools and serving on various boards and advisory councils.

In 2006, Ellen began volunteering with The Lilac Tree in Evanston, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals navigating the divorce process. She later completed comprehensive training in family and divorce mediation at the DePaul University Center for Conflict Resolution. Ellen is on the approved list of mediators for the 19th Judicial Circuit Family Mediation Program in Lake County, Illinois, and frequently volunteers her mediation services there. She is also involved in professional mediation programs in Cook County.

Ellen belongs to several professional organizations, including the Chicago Bar Association, the Lake County Bar Association, the Association of Women Attorneys of Lake County, and the Exclusive Professional Women’s Networking Group. She is also affiliated with North Shore LAW, a collaborative group of women attorneys.

In her personal time, Ellen enjoys spending time with her family and continuing her community involvement. Her combined experience as a litigator and mediator informs her approach to helping individuals and families resolve disputes in a constructive and cost-effective way.

Though courthouses are slowly opening back up, and people are starting to attend court dates in person, successfully mediated cases will continue to be heard in court via Zoom in some counties. Imagine, one brief Zoom appearance and your divorce is finalized. Since March 2020, except for a handful of clients, we have conducted our mediation sessions exclusively via Zoom. Though we were skeptical at first, we have been pleasantly surprised with the following observations: our clients are more civil toward each other, they are completing mediation more efficiently, which lessens the overall cost and time it takes to get divorced, and their ability to co-parent their children remains intact, as they not “burning bridges” during the divorce.
